Multiplying decimals, Mold growing and Making Inferences!

As promised, the blog will be updated weekly in an on-going attempt to keep you updated on all the awesome things happening in Room 32.  Here goes another amazing week:

Math
This week we are tackling multiplying and dividing decimals using LOTS of different strategies! Homework will be on Monday through Thursday.  Remember to use the links to the Homework Helper videos if you need to review anything with you student (Click on the links below)! The videos can be found here:

Science
We are still observing our "Mold Terrariums" and collecting LOTS of cool and fuzzy data!  In addition to fungi, this week we are observing detritivores - animals that eat nonliving plants and other animals!  That's right...we are studying live WORMS!  Prepare for some awesome Twitter pictures and exciting stories!

Language Arts
Word Study
This Thursday we have a vocabulary quiz over our words that use the root "man" - meaning "hand(s)".  The students will be taking these lists/cards home on Wednesday to study for the quiz!

Writing
Our writing this week is focused around a short constructed about fiction genres, daily journal writing, and an informational essay (beginning-of-the-year assessment).  Next week we will wrap -up our Science unit with an essay; detailing what was learned through the food chain activities.

Reading
This and next week we will shift gears from fictional genres to character inferences in fictional texts.  This will include LOTS of analyzing character actions and behaviors to create inferences that answer the questions:
  • "Why would that character do/say that?"
  • "What do you think the character will do next, based on the evidence?"
  • How does the setting affect a characters motivation in a story"
Have a great few weeks.  I'll keep you updated as things progress throughout next week as well.  Remember to follow us on Twitter to see all the amazing things happening in Room 32!  Oh, and Picture Day is on Friday!
